Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your Flathead River Adventure

We want your trip on the Flathead River to be effortless, comfortable, and memorable. Below are answers to the most common questions guests ask before booking a scenic float or custom experience.

What should I wear?

Montana weather can change quickly, so it’s always smart to dress in layers. We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing for summer and warmer layers during spring and fall. The boat itself stays dry inside, but you may get your feet wet when boarding or stepping out, so wear sturdy, water-friendly shoes.

We provide Pendleton blankets for comfort, but bringing a jacket or hat is never a bad idea.

What is your operating season?

Our main season runs April through October, depending on weather and river conditions. Early and late-season trips are possible but are weather-dependent.

If you’re considering a spring or fall trip, contact us directly to confirm water flow and temperature conditions before booking.

Where do we meet you?

Your guide will contact you before your trip to confirm an exact meeting location and time. Launch and takeout points vary depending on water levels and conditions.

Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to park, sign waivers, and use restrooms before departure — there are no bathrooms available mid-river.

How long is the float?

Most floats last about 3 to 4 hours, including setup and shuttle time.

River speed and weather can affect total duration — your guide will adjust the route to match conditions.

If you have a time constraint, please let us know during planning so we can design your float accordingly.

What will I see on this tour?

Each float covers a scenic 6–8 mile section of the Flathead River, offering spectacular mountain and forest views.

  • Wildlife sightings often include:
  • Bald eagles, osprey, and other raptors
  • Beavers, otters, and deer
  • Occasional elk, moose, or black bear

The Flathead’s turquoise water and backdrop of Glacier National Park make for stunning photos — don’t forget your camera!

How many people can you accommodate?

We can accommodate up to 15 guests per trip across our fleet:

  • Two large drift boats (up to 6 guests each)
  • One smaller drift boat (up to 3 guests)

Additional boats can be arranged for larger private groups with advance notice.

Do you accommodate children?

Yes! Children of all ages are welcome.

Per Montana law, kids 12 and under must wear a life jacket for the entire trip — we provide properly sized vests for every child.

Can we bring pets?

Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome on most scenic floats, provided they are comfortable in a boat and remain under control. Please mention this during booking so we can ensure space and safety accommodations. (Note: Pets are not permitted on catered or dinner floats.)

What if it rains or the weather changes?

Montana weather can shift fast. Our guides monitor conditions closely and will provide extra blankets, jackets, or tarps as needed.

If weather becomes unsafe (e.g., lightning or high winds), we will reschedule or refund your trip per our cancellation policy.

Can we bring alcohol?

Absolutely. Guests are welcome to bring wine, champagne, beer, or spirits.

We’ll supply ice, glassware, and a corkscrew, and can bring mixers upon request. Please drink responsibly, as safety always comes first.

Are restrooms available?

There are restrooms at the launch and takeout sites, but none available during the float.

If a mid-river break is needed, your guide will find an appropriate, private shoreline spot.

Can we request a specific guide?

Yes — if you’ve floated with us before or heard great things about a specific guide, let us know at booking. We’ll do our best to accommodate your request, depending on guide schedules.

Should I tip my guide?

Gratuities are always appreciated.

If you enjoyed your experience, a 15–20% tip per boat (or about $150 per guide) is standard.

Our guides work hard to make every trip safe, memorable, and fun.

Can we plan special events or custom trips?

Yes! We frequently host engagements, anniversaries, birthdays, corporate groups, bachelor and bachelorette floats, and even river elopements.

What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?

No problem — we work with local caterers who can adjust menus for most food allergies and preferences. Please mention any restrictions when booking.

How does my car get to the takeout point?

We provide shuttle service for one vehicle per boat so your car is waiting at the takeout when you finish your float.

Additional vehicle shuttles can be arranged for a small fee.

Do I need a license?

Yes. All river trips require each guest to hold a Montana Conservation License ($10) — a new state requirement supporting habitat and river conservation.

You can purchase your license online:

Fishing trips also require a Montana Fishing License

Can I book a trip year-round?

While our primary float season runs April–October, private winter floats may be possible under calm conditions. Contact us directly to discuss availability.
